the rust meta
so tl;dr for the whole thing, which might not be entirely accurate but it's all the information that's available right now
• someone on the core team did something ✨ Controversial ✨. one of the other people on the core team said it was Ashley Williams
• the 3 moderation team members resigned, allegedly because Ashley Williams was mean to white men (which the other core team member called "racism and sexism")
the rust meta
@AgathaSorceress@eldritch.cafe and wouldn't you know it Rust still hasn't been magically uninstalled from my computer and {checks} crates.io is still up
the rust meta
@alexandra yeah i still can't get over that one post that claimed that rust is dead
its such a silly take
the rust meta
@AgathaSorceress@eldritch.cafe I saw somebody on here say "you'd have to be nuts to write anything in Rust at this point"
the rust meta
@alexandra lol yeah that's the post
the rust meta
the rust meta
@Dee yeah me too
re: the rust meta
@AgathaSorceress "allegedly because Ashley Williams was mean to white men" this is years old drama at this point, I don't think it's related
re: the rust meta
@leo i think it was related because they cited it in the hackernews post tho?
re: the rust meta
@leo or at least, i think that's part of their reason, the other part being her not transferring ownership of the wasm-pack repo
re: the rust meta
@AgathaSorceress who's "they" here
re: the rust meta
@leo https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=28633113
Pauan, a former rust wasm core team member
this post is from a few months ago, which is apparently when this whole thing started, and people in the rust subreddit keep pointing at it so that's what I'm going off
re: the rust meta
@AgathaSorceress yeah I doubt this is related. the wasm core team is unrelated to either the core team or mod team and this person is a former member and not a current one
re: the rust meta
@AgathaSorceress also note that the "false accusation" they link to is her saying she's sure some people were uncomfortable to node when someone on the TSC tweeted an article about how having a code of conduct is bad because free speech (which he did)
re: the rust meta
@leo i know it might as well end up unrelated to this, but this seems to be the most related thing right now, considering how little is known
at least, most people keep saying it's something to do with either ashley williams and/or steve klabnik, which is not confirmed, but since this particular drama started around 2-3 months ago and only exploded last week, I'm kinda thinking that it might be related
i guess we can only really wait and find out
re: the rust meta
@leo which is why i'm saying "allegedly" and not claiming to know for sure, since nobody except for the rust team really knows (and apparently some of them don't know either)
the moderators said "our relationship with Core has been deteriorating for months, and our resignation in no way should be seen as a condemnation of your nomination [...]" and didn't say who or what caused this so these posts is all we can draw conclusions from for now
the rust meta
• on the next day the moderation team was temporarily replaced with 2 people; 1 with a trans flag picrew profile pic and the other with they/them pronouns in github bio, which is probably better than having all of them be white cis men
• we got an official acknowledgement, signed by all core team members
