“Cryptocurrency is literally like an eight-year-old’s concept of an evil businessman. He just plugs his pollution machine in and gets money for it. It doesn’t make anything, it just. Pollutes. And makes money. Like a fucking Captain Planet villain”
@lilov Effectivement.
@Sylvhem haha GPU go brrrrrrrr
@Sylvhem these people are hilarious.
@Sylvhem
As far as understood the situation (and my Maths ain't great), it's the standard proof-of-work which is the problem.
If proof-of-steak works out, non-evil cryptos may be possible.
@malin @Sylvhem Proof-of-stake is part of it. But also... like... you need to have a purpose.
The purpose of BTC is to become rich and be unstoppable by government. If you turned it off tomorrow, rich people lose money and no one else cares.
So they also need to find an actual need to fill beyond their own existence.
@Magess @Sylvhem my need was transferring £100 from a friend.
Bank accounts take over an hour to set up, plus travel time, then £15 fee for international transfer, and three days.
Bitcoin took 20 minutes to set up and 10 minutes to transfer with 30p transfer fee.
The saving was about two hours work, three days waiting, and £14.70, plus the value of anonymity.
@Sylvhem
:D well put, but I wouldnt say 'literally'.
As a present reality, I'd agree, for yet it only substitutes banks for shady businesses and has no working alternative to stupid mining. But I wouldnt dismiss it as a concept - the problems it tries to address obviously have weight, so it is not nothing.
@rysiek People looooooove this FUD because it suits their liberal ideology. It reads like the Twitter imp is sooooo smart... But it's just another variation on the same talking points we've been supplied thru psychological warfare.
And it is completely ignorant of how money is made already: an arbitrary process exclusive to the hyper-elite who are more than likely party to genocide and murder thru economic and financial warfare. Dollar supremacy is white supremacy.
politics
@theruran
What do you mean by "liberal agenda"? At least where I live, addressing climate change is in almost every parties election program.
I think one can like cryptocurrencies and still acknowledge, that proof-of-work is probably not the best idea.
@theruran @Sylvhem you off-handedly dismiss important environmental concerns (see: https://fortune.com/2021/04/20/bitcoin-mining-coal-china-environment-pollution/ ), in return offering no more than name-calling ("FUD", "psychological warfare").
You attribute ignorance while at the same time reducing the complex global financial system to "dollar supremacy".
If you ever decide to actually have a meaningful conversation about any of this, here's an interesting piece of data about wealth inequality in cryptocurrencies:

@mike Neat. Still doesn’t make anything though.
@mike No, I’m OK with money, thanks.
