ok where should I start hosting audio streams (story readings etc.) instead of YouTube

I should set up proper podcast hosting somehow

@kara if you have a http server, or even public access cloud storage you have the podcast capabilities, podcast is just media syndicated by Atom or RSS feed which is just XML.

the way I _had_ been doing things, until real life interrupted me, was simply to stream through YouTube, supply background images to my audio by various simple means, and then make up playlists for the resulting videos

it was a simple system but crude, and I want to eliminate using YouTube

if nothing else I want a better place to stream through. Ustream.tv, maybe? what do people prefer around here?

@kara i know a couple people who use mixer over anything else

@kara i don't think there's any "good" platforms to stream on, but this is the only one i've seen people use that isn't twitch or youtube

@hairylarry does it support streams or just uploaded content

@kara It will take a while to build up, but you would be doing everyone a favour by seeding peertube with your good media.

@kara

Peertube is uploaded content I think. It's like a federated Youtube but I don't think it streams.

If I want to upload audio I use archive.org.

If you want to do live audio streaming you can use caster.fm with Mixxx and talk into a microphone live sending an icecast stream to the world.

There are other free icecast options but caster.fm is the one I know about.

@kara

For a produced (pre-recorded podcast) you want to be everywhere. You want a home page with links but you also want to be available on itunes, youtube, etc even though you may not like apple or google or etc. You kind of have to go where the audience is. Soundcloud, archive.org, I'm sure there are others that will host your audio.

Then from your website or blog you provide links.
