tech, soliciting opinions, might devolve into flame war

What kind of Linux distribution would one want to try on a laptop as someone who used to use Arch but has had too many annoying bugs that they didn't have the time to deal with?

Distro should ideally not be in my way, and software development should be easy…

re: tech, might devolve into flame war

Went for a Linux Mint install, things appear to be working ok for now… In the meantime, more and more programs are hanging randomly on my Arch installs. ☹

For some reason I am getting the same random hangs on Debian Stable and Testing? Yay…

re: tech, support

@lexi what hardware? can you describe the hangs more?

re: tech, support

@LittleFox
Hardware:

• Thinkpad X230 (Debian stable/testing, Arch Linux)
• GPD Pocket 2 (Arch Linux)
• GPD P2 Max (Arch Linux)
• Schenker Slim 14 (Arch Linux)

Works on GPD Pocket 2 under Linux Mint for some reason.

Symptoms: messengers based on Electron (Element, Signal, Discord, etc) hang for minutes at a time, not accepting inputs or updating their output, others (e.g. Telegram Desktop) just crash every couple of minutes. Happens on i3, Sway and KDE.

re: tech, support

@LittleFox the problems are also *not* exhibited on an XMG Pro 17 2017 (Windows 10), a Macbook Air 2020 (Mac OS 11), and a custom AMD Ryzen workstation (Windows 10), so this appears to be a Linux specific problem, but it happens across several distros.

re: tech, support

@LittleFox I wanted to try Fedora too but didn't have the patience to try and make that one work on the X230…

re: tech, support

@LittleFox note that the laptops affected have various amounts of RAM (8 GB on the Pocket 2, which works with Mint; 16 GB on the P2 Max and X230, 64 GB on the Slim 14)

re: tech, support
