Hi everyone, I’m moving over to eldritch.cafe from mastodon.social so I figured I would post a reintroduction

Well as my bio says I’m Shahaan—Canadian, mid-30s, I go by he/him pronouns and I’m vegetarian

I’ve been active on Mastodon for over a year now and I generally have positive interactions with people on here

“I continue to stand boldly, brightly, and loudly in front of our parties, unflinchingly visible in my transness and in my authenticity because I know that I am safe, loved, and supported. I'm now far from the only trans person in Barfleet, which makes me enormously happy.

Gene Roddenberry's vision for Star Trek is one of fundamental optimism about humanity, its potential, and its future.”

"... filming Star Trek in Canada. I was surrounded by a huge cast and crew of people I'd basically just met. But when I did tell people, I was stunned to find that this massive group of strangers wholeheartedly accepted and validated me. They welcomed me in with open arms. When I looked like I needed help, someone would go out of their way to help me. If someone had a question about my identity, they asked it thoughtfully and kindly."

"Techno optimism" is the belief that every problem has a technological solution, and that we should wait for it instead of taking actions today.

And your :brain6: is able to not only reconstruct the signal from wiggly atoms, it is not only able to analyse the multiple component layers of this information, it's able to recover each and every bit of psychosocial information encoded in both the signal and in the physical and social context, combined with gesturing, and even historical data and futuristic projections, and understand what you say.

Fuck me is that fascinating!

The complexity of making a lump of meat say "ba" is way way greater than you can imagine.

Multiple organs (lungs, throat, glottis, tongue, jaw, vellum, lips & brain) are working together to coreograph a dance that makes the air in front of your mouth wiggle in a pretty complex pattern that embodies a signal that encodes varying pitch and multiple and covarying contemporaneous sound waves, which in turn encode not only meaning, but a lot of other socially determined info, simultaneously. 🤯

vaccination in Germany, hypocritical bullshit

@shahaan I was able to get the vaccine as a non-citizen in Berlin at a vaccination center. I just showed my passport and my Anmeldung to prove my address. That was it. Must be different in other Bundeslaender.

Doctors can vaccinate anyone with an appointment, too, so long as they have the vaccine in stock.

requesting help, vaccination in Germany

@shahaan

In Rheinland-Pfalz there is the "Impfbus".

There are 12 (IIRC) buses that drive around to various cities and which you can go to to get inoculated.

You don't need German citizenship, but you do need some proof of ID.

I'm guessing other states have something similar.

vaccination in Germany, hypocritical bullshit

@shahaan
Do you know where that person lives atm? There are slightly different rules and possibilities in the individual federal states.

I would recommend not to go too a vaccination center - way too much bureaucracy there.

There are GPs or Vaccination busses and so on.

There are also vaccinations for homeless people, so there should be a possibility somehow.

re: requesting help, vaccination in Germany

@meena @shahaan it wasn't hard for me to find a doctor online via doctolib who did vaccinations asking only for my krankenkasse card, if your parent has that (I'm a noncitizen too)

requesting help, vaccination in Germany

@shahaan I've heard enough horror stories about people being turned away from vaccination centres, that my recommendation is: don't go there

any central bureaucracy in germany is about 1200 times worse than you imagine possible.

instead, go to a GP, maybe one which is a group of GPs teaming up, with lots of Turkish / Arabic / Persian / Slavic names.
These people know how to get shit done *despite* bureaucracy.

vaccination in Germany, hypocritical bullshit

@Stoori @shahaan i mean, it's not like foreigners, or people with an immigration background are at higher risk, because they work shittier jobs...

requesting help, vaccination in Germany

If anyone knows a place that is offering vaccines without the requirement for German citizenship, please let me know.

vaccination in Germany, hypocritical bullshit

@shahaan uhhh....

It's already shit to hoard vaccinations and hold to patents so that other countries don't get them.

But it's some next level shit to deny vaccinations from people who are already in the country, for whatever reason, because they'll be part of the local population anyway and the virus doesn't ask for citizenship to spread...

vaccination in Germany, hypocritical bullshit

A friend recently told me how they finally convinced their staunchly anti-vax parent to go get the vaccine.

Their parent was turned away from the vaccination centre because they don’t hold German citizenship.

And then they have posters like this one.

The hypocrisy is appalling.

I want the mute and un-mute buttons to be separate buttons

I want the play and pause buttons to be separate buttons

It is bad design for them to be the same button

"But when it's muted there's a tiny little cross through the icon to tell you, so you don't need the button"

1. Tiny little cross is tiny
2. Does the cross through the icon mean that it's currently muted, or does it mean that if I push it, it will be muted?
3. I just want a button I can mash and be sure it will mute, okay?

My friend, my dude Harter drawing direct parallels between the story's premise and industrial accidents: "The industrialists of the times took the position that accidents were the fault of the individual worker and that he should therefore bear the responsibility. In one sense they were right. In each individual accident you could go back and point out where the person involved had been careless. And yet their position was false. The responsibility was shared. The individual workers were careless; the industrialist created the unsafe conditions."

I mean these things aren't quite as ancient history as he implies, it's a continuing reality for workers everywhere. But at least he's parsecs ahead of the story's oblivious stans.
