"... filming Star Trek in Canada. I was surrounded by a huge cast and crew of people I'd basically just met. But when I did tell people, I was stunned to find that this massive group of strangers wholeheartedly accepted and validated me. They welcomed me in with open arms. When I looked like I needed help, someone would go out of their way to help me. If someone had a question about my identity, they asked it thoughtfully and kindly."

genocide, infanticide

Hundreds more childrens' corpses found in mass graves at another residential school: nationalpost.com/news/canada/h

No-one should be surprised by this. First Nations have been saying for years that this happened; all that's new is that they're finally getting the resources to look for their "disappeared" relatives.

I hope the dead of every residential school are found soon, and with that some peace for the survivors & relatives. I also hope Canada doesn't just forget & move on.

gross racist medical abuse towards children, canada

In these experiments, control and treatment groups of mal-nourished children were denied adequate nutrition. In one experiment, the treatment group received supplements of riboflavin, thiamine and/or ascorbic acid supplements to determine whether these mitigated the problems – they did not. In another, children were given a flour mix containing added thiamine, riboflavin, niacin and bone meal. Rather than improving nutrition, the children became more anemic, likely contributing to more deaths and certainly impacting development. In these experiments, efforts were made to control as many factors as possible, even when they harmed the research subjects. For example, previously available dental care was denied in some settings because the researchers wanted to observe the state of dental caries and gingivitis with malnutrition.

straight up I am in love with water fountains. whenever I look at a public water fountain I go "this is literally a monument to a functioning civilization." when I look at a public water fountain I think about all of the technology, all of the water filtration and pipes and infrastructure that came together to provide Me drinkable water in a public space
some urban designer built Me a fountain to drink from because I might be thirsty. Literally the opposite of hostile architecture.

i'm really starting to be pissed off by the "gates, bezos, musk etc. are evil, thus remove their wealth" line of arguments.

are these all pretty shitty fellers? yes. but that's the wrong line of argument to pursue.

even if each and every billionaire was a crown jewel of humanity, with ultimate goodness, humility, and decency bestowed unto them by a joint committee of all gods ever existed, even if they were literally incapable of hurting, we should still rid of billionaires and excess wealth accumulation.

the issue is not bad people accumulating money. it's simply some people accumulating all the money.

the issue is all this power and these resources must be controlled democratically and shared by the entire humanity.

it may sound like a small thing but from what i observe "billionaires do good, malaria!" is still the main thing that devolves arguments around wealth accumulation.

re: privilege, vaccine, Canada

@shahaan @eldang i hear that they're pretty meticulous in clinics regarding not wasting any vaccines so far as it's humanly possible. hopefully that's correct.

the issue is the societies we live in are individualistic. some more extemely so, but we've lost community consciousness. same happens with masks really. people still wear them because they believe masks protect them. no, it's a community action, but if you tell people that, they don't really care.

some individualism is good, but we're imagining we live in a fictional universe where "every sheep is hung by its own leg", as the turkish saying goes, which can't be farther from the truth. we're still trying to find someone to punish for covid, when regardless of its source it's our fault it's been so destructive.

Okay, so Facebook now drops a 24 hour ban on folks for using the word "racist". Mark Zuckerberg has apparently bought into Republican / GQP ideas that if you don't let people talk about racism, they can't challenge the system. I would dearly love to see FB brought down by a ransomware attack.

Ok I like the iFixit packaging :)

Also my laptop's new battery is charging. It was an easy swap, with the correct tools (included in the kit). Will find out how well it works once the battery is calibrated!

I have to say that I'm a bit surprised by these poll results!

Because of the strong anglocentric media representation, people in Finland think that taking shoes off when inside is something peculiar and keeping shoes on is the norm around the world.

I knew already that this is not the case, but the number of shoe-wearers is actually so low that it could be written off as an outlier!

(Of course I don't know anything about the geographical distribution of the answers, and they're likely biased)

Begpost, SA mentioned

Hello all,
Recently I told my birther that her husband SA me twice and he denied it. I don’t not feel safe living under the same roof as them. For my safety, I am crowdfunding money for an easier transition for myself. My birther is a narcissist so I don’t have much independence.
Expenses:
$360- phone bill for a couple of months
$3000- for rent (up to 6 months)
$380- for driving course

Last maths lesson I had was pre-2008.

How do I relearn maths?

I know of mathsisfun.com/ and khanacademy.org/. Are these good enough? Anything else that helps or is better?

Advice welcome, :boost_ok:

privilege, vaccine, Canada

But I cannot come to terms with those who know the facts and still refuse to take the Moderna vaccine just because.

Such people are being socially irresponsible. By delaying their vaccination they are endangering others, as well as themselves.

And they don’t understand how enormously privileged they are to be in a position where they feel comfortable enough to exercise their freedom of choice between two of the most effective, safe vaccines currently available. 2/2

privilege, vaccine, Canada

It turns out some people in Canada have been walking out of vaccination queues after learning that they would be receiving the Moderna vaccine instead of Pfizer-BioNTech.

I get that people can be misinformed and once they learn that the two vaccines are essentially the same (type, efficacy, side effects, etc.) that they would change their minds. 1/2
